Are States Investing in a Tobacco-Free Future? It's not enough for tobacco companies to dole out millions in lawsuit settlements and for Americans to think that the anti-smoking battle has been won, Tobin Communications, Inc. discovered while working with The American Legacy Foundation, a Porter/Novelli client. In a public-education program that revealed unprecedented findings about the many millions of dollars states would save in Medicaid costs if they reduced smoking by 25 percent, experts were able to speak candidly about the need for states to invest in comprehensive tobacco control. Via a massive effort to make states aware of the fiscal benefits of investing in tobacco-control programs as budget decisions are made, TCI ensured that the report, "Saving Lives, Saving Money: Why States Should Invest in a Tobacco Free Future," got the media attention it so gravely deserved. Most radio journalists and their audiences had no idea that currently, less than 10 percent of the money states received from settling their lawsuits against the tobacco industry is being spent on tobacco control. But some states, such as California, are reaping the benefits of smart planning: It saved $3 in direct healthcare costs for every $1 spent on tobacco-control programs. |
