Is Support On The Way For The Caregivers Of Alzheimer's Patients?

Alzheimer's disease strikes an estimated one in 10 Americans who are 65 and older and nearly one in two 85 and older. These numbers are not only startling - they also present a major challenge for the caregivers and families of those dealing with Alzheimer's.

With the goal of exposing these key facts and building grassroots awareness about available help for caregivers, Tobin Communications produced in 2005 a breakthrough Radio Media Tour on behalf of Fleishman-Hillard's client, the Alzheimer's Foundation of America. Among the foundation's goals was getting the word out about its annual caregivers' conference and available resources and help from government agencies and non-profits.

In decades past, the national trend has often been to solely focus on those who suffer from diseases. But healthcare experts are reversing that tendency and are reaching out to patients' family members and friends to make them aware of crucial information and outside support.

"Nothing in life prepares families for caring for loved ones with dementia. The role is overwhelming, but knowledge and resources can make an enormous difference," explains Eric J. Hall, AFA's chief executive officer.

"As we encourage caregivers to reach out for care, we also have to ensure that [local and state] agencies are equipped to handle this increasing demand. These grassroots organizations are playing more and more of a vital link to care each day," he added.
